Children’s Desks – The when’s, what’s and where from’s!

If you have young children you’re probably wondering at what age will your child need a desk in their bedroom? Maybe you're not sure what kind of desk would work for their age?  Or, maybe you're wondering where to buy children's desks?

We’ve put together a few tips to help you choose a desk perfect for your child’s bedroom:

What age do kids need a desk in their bedroom?

Well, as soon as kids can sit unassisted and they're playing with things on their own, a desk becomes useful for them (it may also save your dining room table!).  We recommend that from the age of 6 it starts to become important that children have a learning space of their own, but this desk space will need to grow as they do.

Desks can be an essential and versatile piece of furniture for your children. Whether you need the desk to be used for arts and crafts, or a homework station or even somewhere your child can sit down and be creative, it's important that they have their own space.

Children's desks for small spaces - what size?

Making sure your youngster has a good quality children’s desk is an important consideration for their bedroom, and it needs to be just the right size for them. Firstly, you need to measure the space available to fit a desk into your child’s bedroom as you don’t want to buy a product that will take overpower their room.

You need to make sure you invest in a desk that will be suitable for your child in a few years time because they need an organised space where they can do their homework, play games and be creative without you worrying about them drawing on the carpets or losing felt tips down the back of the settee.  Our child-friendly desks are small enough to be tucked away in the corner of a bedroom.

  • If your child is between the ages of 6 and 12 then an 800mm wide slim-line bench desk or A-Frame desk is ideal for their bedroom.
  • If you would like the desk to last them a bit longer then a 1200mm wide desk would fit the bill.

Popular styles of legs when choosing a desk for a child’s bedroom

A-Frame Desks – These desks are sleek and contemporary, the slim-line frame makes it the ideal children’s desk for smaller bedrooms.

Bench Desks – These modern bench desk legs offers a stylish design that would fit in any area of the home especially in a bedroom.

Cantilever Desks – A classic cantilever desk creates a minimal look with a practical function. An excellent choice for a child’s desk, plus they are generally the most affordable option making them a popular desk to have in the home.

Fitting a desk in your kids bedroom colour scheme

All our children’s desks are available in the choice of 4 traditional woodgrain colours or white also if you choose the storage option there are 15 colours to choose from so you can be certain to find a desk that will match the colour scheme for your child’s bedroom.

Keeping a child’s desk clean and tidy

You may be thinking that buying your child a desk is just another thing for you to clean up after they’ve been on a mission with the paint set. Don’t get us wrong children are messy creatures especially when they’re armed with things that allow them to be creative. However, here are three examples of things you can do to help keep your child’s desk organised:

Desks with storage – A desk with over-head or under-desk storage will give you some additional storage space to hide away your child’s arts and crafts sets when they aren’t in use.

Create a pegboard – Attaching some string to a wall in your child’s bedroom and putting pegs on it creates a pegboard that you adapt easily as your child’s needs change. You can hang up their masterpieces on the board which helps free up desk space and stops pictures from getting ruined.

Paint a Blackboard wall – If you’d like to turn one of your child’s bedroom wall into a blackboard then this is easily done with a chalkboard paint. A blackboard calendar on the wall keeps tracks of busy weeks and helps your child be organised. It may also even stop them from colouring on the walls they shouldn't!
